  5.     Day after day, police and irate ethnic Albanians clashed in
  6. Yugoslavia's southern Kosovo province as the demonstrators
  7. protested their domination by the Serbian republic, of which
  8. Kosovo is a part. By the end of last week at least 20 people
  9. were dead, and the Yugoslav daily Vecernje Novosti warned,
  10. "Kosovo is a step away from civil war."

  12.     The unrest began late last month, when 40,000 Albanians took
  13. to the streets of Pristina, Kosovo's capital, demanding the
  14. resignation of local leaders, free elections and the release
  15. of political prisoners. Kosovo's 1.7 million Albanians, who
  16. out-number Serbs and Montenegrins in the region almost 10 to
  17. 1, last flooded the streets eleven months ago, when Serbia
  18. tightened its grip on the nominally autonomous province. That
  19. decision triggered riots that left 28 dead.

  21.     Serbian nationalists last week pressured the central
  22. government to firmly squelch the uprising. The eight-man State
  23. Presidency promised unspecified security measures. Soon after,
  24. troops, tanks and air force jets were deployed throughout
  25. Kosovo.
